Block Storage is now Generally Available!

Nulled is happy to announce that our HDD block storage offering is now live in our primary datacenter, MLI!

As you’re probably aware, we’ve been focusing real hard on standardizing our addons portfolio and adding as much functionality to your services as possible. While the smaller items like Extra IPv4 addresses or 10Gbit drops really only require us to keep inventory of these items and track billing options internally, larger services like block storage or managed backups require dedicated infrastructure to support, which is made more difficult by the current market inflation due to AI.

However, we’ve managed to scrape together enough spare parts and hard drives to provide our first block storage server, armed with 48TB of available space ready for you, and we’ve even gone the extra mile and exposed that server to colocation VLANs as NFSv4 mounts dedicated to your machine(s) so that you can utilize it for colo as well as VPS offerings.

Here’s the specs of our standardized block storage server:

  • Chassis: Quanta D51PH-1ULH (These are very silly machines. They are so long that they’ll stick out of any non-full depth rack because they have a full dual CPU server alongsize 12x 3.5” bays and 4x 2.5” in a 1U chassis!
  • HDDs: 6x Seagate Exos X18 16TB (Capacity up to 12 as hot-added vdevs, no downtime required to expand)
  • SSDs: 2x120GB in RAID1 for boot, 2x120GB in RAID1 for SLOG
  • CPUs: 2x E5-2620 v4’s (they’re cheap and don’t need to go fast)
  • RAM: 96GB DDR4 ECC (for ARC)
  • Networking: 10Gb right to our core switches
  • Drive arrangement: RAID10 (2 disk mirrors added as individual vdevs to the pool for max performance).
A very long Quanta server loaded with drives.

You have no idea how unwieldy these things are.

So for the most important part: Pricing. We are launching this at a very reasonable $1/mo per 100GB of block storage. Plus, to ensure everyone gets reasonable performance out of these hard drives, each 100GB of space entitles you to 20 IOPS and 5 MB/s of sustained read and write bandwidth. If you buy 1TB of block storage, you’ll get 200 IOPS and 50 MB/s of I/O bandwidth. Should be plenty.

The IOPS cap and bandwidth may seem odd, but keep in mind that every provider out there will cap HDD storage performance, they just don’t tell you that it is happening until your workload comes to a screeching halt. The idea is to discourage putting heavy workloads like databases on these volumes. Even with that said, we’ve taken zero performance shortcuts with this launch, with SLOG drives, 96GB of RAM for caching, 16 cores per box for real-time compression, and full RAID10 across the board as standard.

Should you need additional fast storage for your VPS, you are free to customize your plan (where capacity is available) and add increments of 50GB of SSD storage for $2/mo each. You can order this, and any other addons, by submitting it in the order forms for the service you want (there is a new field for addons). Existing customers can send in a contact form email with what you need and we’ll get you hooked up or just reach out to us directly.

We have more cool things coming down the pipe. Stay tuned for more!
