We Are Working Extremely Hard to Take Less of Your Money
Behind the scenes, we’ve been working incredibly hard to find creative ways to lower prices without just straight up lowering prices (we do need to keep the lights on) or compromising on performance or reliability. Searching for win-wins for both us and you takes time and engineering. However, we’ve got FIVE major things to discuss that all benefit your costs in some way, shape, or form, as we continue on our mission to not sell out like other hosting providers and offload AI hardware inflation costs directly onto you (which I think is rude).
That's gonna be you after you're done reading this article.
IPv6 Only VPSes
Yes, they are here! The single most effective cost reduction we can provide is the option to eschew the trappings of IPv4 for VPSes. We have done our very best to ensure that IPv6-only VPSes work out of the box, with SLAAC for automatic IP assignment, resolvers, our mirrors, Remcon and more supporting inbound IPv6, and of course as many routed /64 blocks as you want. Now, this doesn’t mean they are perfect. IPv6-only is still not a great experience. Not our fault, it’s just the nature of the beast. Not even Github supports it, for some reason. You should review the caveats listed here for more information before you purchase.
To purchase, head to the usual Kūhaku order page and set that IPv4 address count from a 1 to a 0. This will subtract $3/mo from your VPS bill, meaning the prices now start at $4/mo for a VPS. That’s nearly half what the standard price is ($7/mo).
This message will show when you've successfully gone IPv6 only on your VPS.
Annual Billing
We are making billing terms an option for all products starting today. All billing terms were either monthly (99% of customers), or on a prearranged contract for large purchases in bulk on agreed terms. Now, you get a third option at order time, where you can pay for your service up front for a year. Why would you want to do this (outside of the fact that you want to support our mission to make hosting suck less), you ask? Well, because it comes with a 10% discount!
All services can get 10% off their list price by paying up front annually. This means colo is $54/mo ($36/mo per additional unit) paid annually. Our lowest tier VPS is now $3.60/mo, paid annually with IPv6 only networking. We’ve gone from the minimum cost of entry to nulled. being $7/mo, to slashing it in half down to $3.60/mo. Not bad for a few months of work! You’ll see new dropdown boxes on all order forms for billing term options to select monthly or annual. The form will now show you what the price will be with the discount pre-applied.
Please note: Annual billing is an option that affects your full account. You cannot mix and match monthly and annual billing terms for your services, if you have more than one service with us. It is an account wide option. If you are interested in moving your monthly account to annual billing, please email us or contact us using the contact form and we’ll make it happen.
Colo Promotion for September
Starting now and ending on September 30th: We are celebrating our acquisition of a new rack at our primary DC by offering a free month of service for new colo customers! You will still need to pay your first invoice, but it will be credited back to you in full after payment and apply on your second month of service. You do not need to enter a promo code or do anything to activate this promotion, it is automatic.
This promotion is usable only one time as it only applies for new customers, but has no dollar limit. If you buy a whole 10U of space, you’ll get the full month’s amount back for all ten units. You can also combine it with the free server promotion (reminder: the active list of free servers available is here ), which is honestly a ridiculously good deal. Free colo, free servers… there really hasn’t been a better time to own your own gear!
I retroactively granted a customer this promotion already, as you can see.
Free Redundant Networking for Colo
With our acquisition of a new rack at our primary DC, we also have racked our first Gen 2 switch stack, which provides a total of 96 ports of 10G SFP+ and 96 ports of 1G RJ45 to the rack over two independent 40G QSFP+ links back to the aggregation switches in the first rack (which then go right into the router, soon to be routers). This is more than enough ports to ensure that every server can get two uplinks of either flavor without us worrying about running out of ports.
Therefore, all customers from this point forward will be getting 2 gigabit uplinks as standard (as well as an uplink for your remote access), and if you upgrade to 10G ports, you’ll get two of those as well for the regular price of $10/mo.
We will be decommissioning the old Gen 1 switch stack in the first rack in the near future so we can extend this benefit to existing customers as well. That will require an impacting maintenance window, so stay tuned for that announcement.
All the bandwidth you've ever dreamed of.
Reminder of our Referral Program
We soft-launched our referral program by including the parameters of it in section 5 of our Service Agreement . I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware that it existed, because it provides a really powerful way for you to earn account credit.
As you probably know, we don’t really advertise. We are a 100% word of mouth shop. Honestly, I find ads extremely repulsive (who doesn’t use an ad blocker these days) and don’t want to pay into that mess of a cottage industry. But this leaves us at a disadvantage, because everyone else does. So, the best way to work around this is a referral program, where existing customers (who are hopefully satisfied with us enough to recommend us) can earn account credit by sending new customers to us.
To participate, check your invoices for a customer ID starting with “cus_“. This is your unique customer ID, and it is safe to share. When a new customer enters that into the order form, it links their order to you, and if that new customer sticks with us for three months, you get whatever they’re spending in a month as a direct credit. There is no limit to the amount and no limit to how many customers you can refer. Credit is automatically applied a few days after the three month threshold has passed.
I hope all of these cost savings measures help you in some way. The hosting market is only getting crazier out there, but we’ll do everything we can to provide the best value and service possible, despite what others are doing in this space.
